Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon
This is the 2019 edition of Lenovo’s smallest X series business Ultrabook. One of the latest Lenovo members, it has a larger display than previous generations at 13.3”. Also, it is easy to carry with a weight of only 2.7 lbs (1.22 kg). The small-laptop space migrates from the 12.5-inch ThinkPad X280 to a new 13.3-inch variant. This pitches ThinkPad X390 against ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
Design
When you view these two laptops from a distance, it’s hard to tell them apart. They both come with the same black and red aesthetics. They both have the same ThinkPad logo (lit with an LED on the lid), red TrackPoint in the middle of the keyboard, and the dual buttons on top of the touchpad.
Body
The ThinkPad X390 is made of aluminum and magnesium alloys, while the ThinkPad X1 Carbon mixes magnesium alloy and carbon fiber. Both the laptops have passed through MIL-STD-810g military certification process to test for durability under different environments.
Size Does Matter
The ThinkPad X390 display is larger than previous generations at 13.3-inch and has small bezels. Hence, it is 12.28” x 8.55”. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon has a 14-inch display at 12.73” x 8.54”. Clearly, X390 is deeper than X1 Carbon. Let’s consider the weight. The X390 is 0.67” thick and weighs 2.84 pounds compared to the X1 Carbon at 0.62” and 2.49 pounds. This makes the X390 smaller in only one dimension. Performance
Lenovo ThinkPad X390 features up to 8th Gen Whiskey Lake quad-core CPUs, Intel Core i7-8565U with vPro, up to 1TB fast PCle SSD storage up to 32GB 2400MHz soldered DDR4 RAM. The X1 Carbon is still using the slightly older Kaby Lake R versions.
Display
Regardless of generations, X1 Carbon takes the lead in the display. The X390 is limited to 13.3” HD (1,366 x 768) and Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) touch or non-touch displays, the X1 Carbon offers 14” WQHD (2,560 x 1,440) option with Dolby Vision high dynamic range (HDR) and 500 nits of brightness. Portability
The ThinkPad X1 is startlingly thinner and lighter than the Lenovo X390. The X1 Carbon has a 57 watt-hour battery compared to the X390’s 48 watt-hour battery. The X1 Carbon has a larger display. Neither of these laptops impressed us in the battery tests, so this one is a draw.
Our Verdict – X1 Carbon Gets the Upper Hand
The ThinkPad X390 costs slightly less than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. However, the Carbon X1 is lighter and way easier to carry. Moreover, it has an incredible display bundled with spill resistant keyboard with white LED lighting and super sleek design, making it worth every penny.
