Purpose of third eye sensor
The third eye sensor has been created by Paeng Min-wook, a South Korean industrial designer, that can be buckled on the forehead and allows users to use their smartphones on the go. The “Third Eye” specially caters to obsessive mobile phone users who can now strap it to their foreheads so they can browse injury-free on the go.
An extra eye will be needed in the future
The third eye sensor is a part of Paeng’s artwork “Phono Sapiens”. The device comprises a gyro sensor that measures the oblique angle of the user’s neck. It also includes an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance between the robotic eye and any obstacles to ensure the users don’t bump into things while happily browsing on their mobiles whilst moving around. The device has a translucent eyelid which opens up as soon as it senses that the user has lowered his/her head to use the smartphone. It automatically alerts the user of an impending danger when it senses an obstacle withing one to two meters. Paeng said, “As we cannot take our eyes off from smartphones, the extra eye will be needed in the future.” He also said that the two sensors used in the design of the third eye are linked to an open-source single-board micro controller, with a battery pack. Paeng is currently pursuing his post graduation in Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College and is planning to create a camera module for the third eye. In the future, he also wants to design a mobile phone application that can be linked to the third eye sensor to make it easier to control and use.
